Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Those most are risk are infants, young children, teenagers and young adults . Meningitis and septicaemia are not always easy to recognise and in the early stages symptoms can be similar to flu. Knowing the difference or recognising the signs could mean the difference between life and death. Recognising the symptoms and acting quickly saves lives. There are approximately 4,000 cases of meningitis per year in the UK, 1 in 10 of those will die. While deafness is the most common form of permanent damage, in severe cases (where septicaemia has occurred) fingers, toes and limbs may need to be amputated. No one knows who or when meningitis and septicaemia will strike. But knowing that you have good information and the Arc close at hand in your medicine cupboard will help you when you most need it.
