It is important for spinal development that young babies should lie flat. Traditionally, during this period a pram would have been used to transport the baby. Later, when the baby was able to to sit up unaided, the pram would have been replaced by a pushchair.
Today, there are many options for satisfying both your baby's changing needs and meeting the requirements of your own lifestyle. This guide to buying a pram, pushchair or baby travel system is intended to cover the main options available. Two In One
A Two in One has a detachable seat unit, with a five point harness, which initially allows the baby to lie flat and later converts to pushchair mode in which the baby can sit up.
Whilst all models come with a hood, some also come with other accessories such as footmuffs and aprons which give added protection. The seat unit can be fitted to face towards you or to face the world. The pushchair is suitable for children up to approximately 3½ years old

Three In One
A Three in One has the features of a Two in One but also includes a detachable carrycot.
The carrycot is used for very young babies. It allows the baby to lie flat and is generally more roomy than a Two in One. It is usually suitable for overnight sleeping and, if so, it is not necessary to purchase a separate moses basket or crib. The detachable carrycot enables a sleeping baby to be carried from the pram into the house without being disturbed.
Once the baby is able to sit up, the seat unit would be used. This is usually adjustable so that the baby can still lie flat but has a five point harness for securing the baby. It can be placed on the chassis to either face yourself or to face forwards.

Baby Travel Systems
A Travel System describes any pram or pushchair with a collapsible chassis that will allow a car seat to be fixed to it. This would be either a Group 0 (for babies up to 10kg) or Group 0+ (for babies up to 13kg). It is extremely important to ensure, as with all car seats, that this correctly fits your car.
The car seat can be attached to the chassis at the destination without disturbing the baby. It is important to remember however, that during the period of development before the baby is able to sit up, car seats which do not allow the baby to lie flat should not be used for long periods of time.

Three Wheelers
Three wheeled pushchairs were originally designed for off-road walking and jogging but have now become increasingly popular in towns and cities. They are usually lightweight and manoeuvrable with inflatable tyres.
Most types are now suitable from birth but may require accessories to accommodate young babies for example a removable carrycot or a new born support cushion.
Inflatable tyres are now often available as an alternative on most types of pram or pushchair making them more suitable for rough ground. Designs intended for frequent use in the countryside usually incorporate larger diameter wheels and are often referred to as 'All Terrain' models.

POINTS TO CONSIDER BEFORE PURCHASING A PRAM OR PUSHCHAIR
- If you purchase a Three In One, provided the carrycot has been approved for overnight sleeping, there is no need to purchase a moses basket or crib. Alternatively, if you intend to purchase, or already have, a moses basket or a crib then a Two In One may be a more suitable option.
- Whilst all collapsible chassis should fit into any car boot, you should consider whether the folded unit is sufficiently compact to allow you to store any other items which you may need to carry in the boot at the same time.
- You may wish to check that you are happy operating any folding mechanism and that the model is of a weight which you are comfortable handling.
- Weight and manoeuvrability will be important considerations for you if you are likely encounter obstacles such as steps on a typical journey or make use of public transport
- If you like hill or off road walks, or often walk over uneven ground then consider prams or pushchairs with inflatable tyres.
