Decorating Your Nursery or Child's Bedroom
  • Invariably, the baby's room, or nursery as it has been traditionally called, is usually one of the smallest rooms in the house. Therefore, making the best use of the space available is essential.
  • Firstly, make a list of the essential requirements i.e. a Cot or Cotbed, storage space and area to change baby
  • The next stage is to get an idea of the dimensions for these items so that you can realistically plan where the items are going to be positioned, taking into account the position of windows, radiators and any other fixed features i.e. built in wardrobes, fireplaces etc.
  • If you haven't yet selected your furniture range then use an approximation based on the dimensions given for main brand items
  • We often advise our customers to put newspaper down on the nursery floor, cut to the dimensions of the various pieces of furniture. This gives a very visual idea of how the room will look

Key Items
  • It is easy to go over the top when purchasing items for a baby, so we have outlined the key items for baby's first needs but this list isn't definitive and only highlights the basic requirements. Each individual will add to this list based on different needs and tastes
  • Cot or Cotbed: often one of the most frequently asked questions to our team of sales advisors. There's no right or wrong answer but as a guide we usually recommend a Cotbed if there isn't a single/toddler bed already available for when baby has outgrown the Cot. A Cotbed will last for longer than a Cot and so would give more time until a second purchase is necessary. If a single/toddler bed is already available then a Cot is all that would be needed, as baby could move straight from the Cot to the single/toddler bed. Another governing factor could be the space available, as a Cot takes up less room than a Cotbed so may be the preferable option for a smaller room
  • Baby Changing area: Although not essential, it is a good idea to have an area specifically for changing baby, where nappies and toiletries are kept handy. It is also better for the parent/carer if they are able to change baby from a comfortable height rather than bending over a bed or on the floor. A dresser/chest of drawers with a changing mat placed on top, makes a good changing area and doubles up for storage two. There are also changing units that are specifically designed for this purpose and have a built in bath too. These are great for serving this purpose but cannot be used for anything else after baby has grown.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Never leave a baby unattended when on a high surface
  • Storage: It is essential that some form of storage is allocated for baby's clothes and other items and can take the form of a Wardrobe, Tallboy or Dresser (the latter as stated above can also double up as a changing area too). If space is very limited, then this could be in another room
  • Black out blinds or lining on the curtains
  • Feeding/Nursing Chair: by no means essential but highly recommended if the space is available. It doesn't necessarily have to be an expensive purchase and any comfortable chair will suffice and could even be re-upholstered to match the nursery. Our Dutailier Glider Chairs are available in a range of colours that will co-ordinate with most decors and offer a good long term investment
  • Stokke: offer a wide range of furniture that is adaptable to most sizes of nursery and represents excellent value for money as most of their pieces can be used from birth to teenager.

Decor
  • It is wise to stick to a fairly neutral colour scheme if you don't know what sex the baby is but of you do know, then you can create a theme based on the baby's sex.
  • Whatever colour scheme/theme you select, it is usually a good idea to keep the walls as simple as possible. Unless, it really is essential e.g. the walls are not in brilliant condition, we would recommend avoiding the use of wall paper. A young child can have very definite views on how there room should look and so you might very soon end up re-decorating the 'baby themed' wall paper with something more in keeping with your child's favourite character or theme
  • As an alternative to wall paper paint the walls with a neutral colour that ties in with the rest of the colour scheme and to brighten it up you could try stencils County Collection range) or a simple border (see our Izziwotnot range) which are easier to remove, when it comes to re-decorating
  • One of the most effective looks is plain white which can then be accessorised with say pink or blue accessories once the child has been born and so reflecting their gender
Themed Rooms
  • If you decide to choose a theme for the nursery or child's room, there are lots of ideas to choose from
  • Again, if you don't know the sex of the baby, then there are many neutral themes to choose from and ideas might include for example: Jungle, Farm, Circus, Toys etc
  • Gender specific themes are great fun and for an older child you can even reflect the child's favourite story or activity in the theme, for example for girls Fairies and Princesses are very popular themes and for boys Cars, Sailing, Football are all very popular ideas

Transform a room for as little as £70
  • Sand down and re-paint old furniture in a colour that ties in with your chosen theme then transform each piece by replacing the drawer knobs from our Tree House range
  • Finish the look off with frames for the light switches and a co-ordinating mirror
  • Accessorise with matching Waste Paper Bins, Cushions, Book Ends, Growth Charts and Lampshades
  • Re-cover using the co-ordinating fabric which can be purchased by the metre
  • Transform walls with Stencils from County Collection
